In India, any agency that recruits workers for overseas employment must hold a valid Recruitment Agent (RA) licence issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India. Licensed agents operate through the Government's eMigrate system, which is designed to protect workers going abroad.
A licence is not just paperwork. It means the agency is registered, accountable to the Government, and legally bound to follow a proper emigration process. An agent without this licence has no authority to recruit you for overseas work — no matter how convincing they sound.
Before you pay anything or hand over documents, do these simple checks:
Ask for the RA licence number. A genuine agent will give it to you without hesitation. It looks something like B-XXXX/…/2026. If they dodge the question, that is your first warning.
Verify it on the Government portal. You can check registered recruitment agents on the official eMigrate website (eMigrate.gov.in). A real agent's details should match what they have told you.
Look for a real, registered office. A permanent office with a proper address is a sign of a legitimate business. Be cautious of an agent who only ever meets you in a hotel or on WhatsApp and has no verifiable office.
Check that everything is in writing. Your job offer, salary, role, contract length and any costs should all be given to you clearly and in writing — not just promised verbally.

Walk away — or at least pause and verify — if you see any of these:
Pressure to pay large amounts in cash, urgently, especially with no receipt or written breakdown.
A refusal to show a licence or give a verifiable office address.

Being asked to travel on a visit or tourist visa for what is supposed to be a work job. This is dangerous and often illegal.
No written contract, or a contract that does not match what you were told.

If someone is vague about money, or the numbers keep changing, that is a red flag — whatever they claim to charge.

Where is your registered office?
Can I see the job offer, salary and contract in writing?

A genuine agent will welcome these questions. Only someone with something to hide will be annoyed by them.
